Trentham House (Mother & Baby)

Acocks Green

Room in Trentham House

Trentham House provides accommodation and support to young women aged 16-25 who are either pregnant or have a child. We work with 17 young women who are accommodated at the project and an additional 4 to whom we deliver support in the community.

Aims and Objectives

We aim to prevent youth homelessness by providing young women with the necessary skills, experience and confidence to become a parent and help them find and keep a home. We do this by providing holistic support packages which are led by the needs of the young women.

Support

We offer support to young people utilising a person centred approach which incorporates the needs and aspirations of young women, as well as information accrued via their risk assessments and any other organisation or service who works with them. We work within a multi-disciplinary setting, using joint working protocols to ensure the young women receives the best service and assisting them to achieve the identified outcomes. Advice and support can include:

Finances - Including budgeting, welfare benefits, debt management,

Savings, paying bills, using the phone, letter writing.

Obtaining work - Interview skills, CV building, job search, literacy, numeracy, completing application forms, information about courses, training, college, apprenticeships etc.

Household skills – domestic skills, basic DIY, gardening skills, changing a bulb, fuse, decorating, maintaining a tenancy, household info e.g. stop cocks, fuse boards, cleaning etc

Health and hygiene - misuse of drugs, alcohol, smoking, healthy eating,

Personal hygiene, using medication, contraception, health and safety in the home, dealing with domestic violence, personal security/keeping safe outside the home, any other physical and mental health issues etc

Social skills - using leisure time, managing anger and violence, making choices, family mediation, assertiveness, problem solving, dealing with conflicts and arguments, communicating with people, making friends and forming relationships, living with other people etc.

Parenting Skills- We advise and guide young women on the skills needed to look after a baby and work closely with the community midwife, Health Visitor, local Children’s Centre and Social care and Health as a number of children are subject to a child protection plan.Although we are not an assessment centre we do compile reports for case conferences and court and all young women are made aware of our Safeguarding Policy on admission.

We will provide a service to young women who are aged 15 with the support of Social Care and Health but are unable to support those over 25 years or young women who do not have leave to remain in this Country. We also recognise that some young women may have specific needs for which we may not be able to offer the level of skills or support required to address their needs. In these instances we would refer to specialist services for additional support e.g. substance misuse, abuse.

Outcomes

The outcomes for each young woman vary and dictated by their needs, aspirations and skills when coming to the service. These are generally set by the young women when they come to the project but may change during their stay. Needs and aspirations are identified through support plans and goals set accordingly, we ensure that all outcomes meet the five Every Child Matters Outcomes:

  • To (re)establish and or maintain contact with family and friends as appropriate and practicable.
  • Positive engagement with Support Package
