A chronological list of developments at St Basils

2008

Official opening and renaming ceremony of 110 St Andrews Road as Milner Court. The bulding was re-opened by Jean Milner wife of the late founder of St Basils, Les Milner. We paid tribute to his memory, in the rededication of the new building.

Closed Carole Gething House, Small Heath, for refurbishment. Moved staff and residents to Dogpool Lane in Stirchley, Birmingham.

2007

Completed refurbishment of 110 St Andrews Road and moved staff and tenants back in. Increased capacity from 21 tiny bedsit rooms to 25 individual flats. Improvements include larger fully furnished rooms with en-suite shower and toilet, computer training room, fitness suite. Welcoming reception, security and safety features, including sprinkler system.

2006

We moved everyone out of the New Boot, 110 St Andrews Road, Bordesley, whilst the property undergoes a total refurbishment . Staff and residents moved in to 91 Dogpool Lane, Stirchley. We held the official openings of Brandwood Crescent and Conybere Gardens

2005

Beoley Court and Grange Court. We have taken on management of 28 units of accommodation in partnership with Redditch MBC.

Brandwood Crescent, our brand new build 10 apartment property on the Moneyhull site in Kings Norton.

Coneybere Gardens - we are about to move 30 young people from Aston Brook Green across to this lovely Highgate accommodation.

Prevention Centre was opened in Allcock St by Councillor John Lines and service user Jermaine Clarke.

2004

Youth Offending Service partnership, we have a dedicated emergency bed space available to a young person who needs accommodation whilst awaiting a court appearance. We also provide YOS with an accommodation pathway co-ordinator.

The Link Housing Advice and Referral Centre moved from Dalton St to high profile City Centre premises at 5 Ryder St.

EET, Education Employment and Training: Life Skills programme, groundbreaking skills training for young people, ending with City & Guilds accreditation and a graduation ceremony!

Offmoor Road, a local project in Bartley Green, to enable 6 young people to stay near to their support networks. A refurbished property, providing 6 self contained units. Our first property in partnership with the West Midlands Fire Service regarding installation of the life sprinkler system

Resettlement Floating Support now has 6 schemes in operation.

Prevention Department: formed to include Homeless Prevention Project, STaMP, Family Mediation and St Basils Link.

Schools Training and Mentoring Project - began groundbreaking work within schools and peer education.

Edmonds Court Nursery - a unique provision for young parents on site at our foyer.

Les Milner retires as Managing Director after 27 years at St Basils. He welcomes Jean Templeton as our new Managing Director

Family Mediation work, to enable a young person to regain contact with family

'Adrenalin' Fashion Shop opened in Sutton Coldfield High St. Providing training and work experience for young people

Edmonds Court Foyer Creche was opened in a Portacabin.

Howard House opens to provide longer term accommodation for young people.

Edmonds Court becomes Birmingham's first foyer.

Employment education and training development work started.

Resettlement: Floating Support project started offering intensive housing resettlement support to young people moving into registered social landlord tenancies for the first time.

Resettlement: Tenant Support Project started offering intensive housing resettlement support to young people moving into local authority tenancies for the first time.

1997

Mildenhall House became St Basils first project to be opened outside the city boundaries, in Solihull. It provides semi-independent accommodation to five local young people.

Launch of our Silver Jubilee Appeal by His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury - George Carey . followed by visits of our Silver Jubilee Patrons throughout the year, including HRH The Duke of Gloucester, and a postcard appeal by Sir Cliff Richards.

Shaftesbury House, an existing project, became part of the St Basils organisation. It provides long stay supportive accommodation for young women.

1995

Short Heath Court opened to provide longer term semi-independent accommodation the young single mothers with babies/toddlers. 'Challenge Anneka' TV programmes first 'building' attempt took 58 hours.

1994

Edmonds Court opened in Small Heath. Our largest single project to date, providing long stay semi-independent accommodation for younger people, including single parents with toddlers.

1994

Edgwood House, an existing project, became part of the St Basil's organisation. It provides medium and long stay supportive and semi-independent accommodation for young people. Edgwood now also provides emergency accommodation on a 24 hour access basis.

Priory House is opened to provide long stay semi-independent accommodation for young mothers with their babies or toddlers.

1993

Grosvenor Court is opened to provide supportive short and long-term and semi-independent accommodation for young men.

1992

The Resettlement Centre was opened to provide individual and group support for young homeless people on a referral basis.

1992

Carole Gething House was opened to provide supportive short and long-stay, and semi-independent accommodation for young homeless women under one roof.

1988

The New Boot was opened to replace the original Boot night shelter and provided emergency and short stay supportive accommodation for young homeless men.

1987

Tennyson House was opened to provide medium/long-stay supported accommodation for homeless young men. This allowed for move on accommodation from the Boot night shelter

1980

12 houses at Aston Brook Green rented from a housing association to provide long-stay semi-independent accommodation for young homeless people.

1979

Trentham House was opened to as a registered nursing home for young homeless mothers and their babies

1978

The St Basils Link was opened to provide a site for personal counselling and help to young homeless people.

1975

Yardley House was opened to provide emergency supportive accommodation for young homeless women.

1972

The original Boot night shelter was opened at the rear of St Basils Church

From the 'Boot' in 1972 to the 'New Boot' in 1988, setting the standard for individual rooms leading ultimately to our current aspirations of everyone living in self contained units.
