“A gritty and gutsy programme, the St Basil’s Mediabox project has been a tremendously touching and moving experience for all those involved. Its purpose has been to enable empowerment, self-confidence and skills development for the participating young people, through the uses of cutting edge multimedia technology. This project leaves us at Dynamics Community Arts strengthened, uplifted, and inspired. “
Jean Templeton, Chief Executive, St Basils “I am pleased to say that the Mediabox programme has been a very positive experience for young people at St Basils. For some it has been their first experience of such a programme and for others it has been an opportunity to stretch their learning further and into other art mediums.”
The young people also had an an opportunity to meet learning providers such as, New Technology Institute, South Birmingham College, Birmingham City University, Creative Launchpad, Creative Alliance amongst others. They will also have the opportunity to meet potential employers, BBC, Central TV, Reuters, Screen WM and the UK Film Council.
Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Mediabox project was delivered in partnership with Dynamics Community Arts, a local arts and media training organisation. The project was devised so that all young people at St Basils could work with the most up to date media programmes in a creative way to become skilled in areas such as, digital video filming and editing, animation, VJ-ing; radio broadcasting, desktop publishing, podcasting, photography, and digital music production. Creating the opportunity for them to get this experience and then to consider future training and work opportunities in the fields of their choice.
The training was carried out at three St Basils residential schemes, Edmonds Court Foyer, Conybere Gardens, Yardley House and the St Basils Resettlement Centre, each of which specialised in a specific area of creative opportunities. The schemes will continue to provide media based training opportunities for young people in the future under the umbrella project,St Basils Creative Arts Academy.
