From January 2008 to March 21st 2008 all schools in the West Midlands region have been invited to take part in the free St Basils Schools Sculpture Challenge competition.

The challenge is to create a winning sculpture made completely out of scrap cardboard.

This competition is designed to be fun and educational, whilst promoting team work, addressing the Citizenship remit promoting charitable work done by schools in the community. It also contains a very large element of creativity and practical problem solving that the pupils will love to get involved with. The activity also encourages environmental awareness through the issue of recycling cardboard.

Instruction for schools who wish take part it can all be found on our web pages for the Schools Sculpture Challenge or type in http://www.stbasils.org.uk/fundraisingsupportingus/Schools+Sculpture+Challenge. Or call Steve Rainbow on 0121-772-9614.

A panel of esteemed judges will short list the best 5 entries from senior schools, and the best 5 from junior/infant schools. The winning schools will be announced in the Birmingham Mail and other press. An award ceremony will be held in April to present the 2 winning trophies and the 4 runner-up certificates.

Cadbury have always helped local schemes supporting the work done in the areas of education and homelessness. That is why they are keen, and proud, to sponsor this challenge and be associated with the work done by St Basils in preventing youth homelessness. Fro more information about this work go to www.stbasils.org.uk

Cadbury and the Birmingham City Council have also offered to display some of the winning sculptures at public venues around the city. ENDS

Notes to editors:

St Basils aims to raise its profile within the schools in this region to help us to continue to prevent youth homelessness. One of the main reasons visible street homelessness is so low in Birmingham, compared to all other major UK cities, is a direct result of St Basils work with schools and the prevention services that we provide through the Schools Training and Mentoring Project. We have received funding to share good practice across the whole of the UK as the National Centre Of Excellence in preventing youth homelessness.
