Big cheque presentation

4th July, St Basils, Trentham House celebrated our ‘First Steps’ into the new conservatory. At 2pm Heart FM presenter Steve Denyer officially opened the conservatory for young mums and their babies. Heart FM ‘First Steps Appeal’ donated £16,500 for the building of the new conservatory which provides much needed play space for the babies. The ceremony kicks off the projects open day to which everyone from the local community has been invited

Steve Denyer, Morning Presenter on Heart said: "Through our annual event Run for Home, we ask our listeners to raise lots of money for local deserving causes. We are delighted to help St Basils, Trentham House and hope this will make a real difference for it's users."

Trentham House provides housing and support for 17 mums with their babies or in the late stages of pregnancy. We did not have a suitable play area for the children. The lounge was being utilised for mums in training and education. We needed a space where we could offer a whole range of activities such as arts and crafts, ballpool, soft play equipment, singing and reading. We needed somewhere where the mums and babies could celebrate with birthday parties and cultural events. It also means that we can further support the mums with ‘Surestart’ and enable babies to develop and learn through play, interaction and sharing.

Mums were also eagerly looking forward to using the conservatory. A resident said:

“I love the idea of the conservatory as my son is a toddler and there is not much for him to do. I occasionally take him to ‘Whacky Warehouse, but I cannot afford to do this very often. I know that my son would really benefit from playing with other children it would help him to interact better and also get some excercise.”

At St Basils we work with young people, age 16 to 25, to prevent youth homelessness by providing accommodation and support. Trentham House is one of our two mother and baby homes which are both in Birmingham. We provide a range of accommodation and support services in Birmingham, Solihull and Redditch.
