St Basils young person secures Uni place

The Resident Rep of one of St Basils supported accommodation projects, Carol Gething House based in Small Heath, has been offered a place at a university in London to study Fine Art and Sculpture Installation.

Her support worker Martin said: “Jasmine has done really well, she should be very proud of this achievement, and she’s influencing the other young people as well. She’s been instrumental in increasing attendance at our Wednesday in house Art club, she has led some quite in-depth discussions with the other young residents around topics such as symbolism in art and has also encouraged them to go back to college and do something that inspires them.”

Jasmine said: “My favourite artists are Damian Hirst and Andy Goldsworthy, I’m really looking forward to the course because we have to research other artists like them but find our own unique style as well. I'm grateful to St Basils Learning, Skills and Work team because they helped out with the travel expenses so I could attend the interview. With support from staff here I'm looking for accommodation in London now and a job so I can support myself whilst I'm studying. I’ve also had a lot of opportunities here to get involved in activities which have taught me how to communicate with more confidence. I don’t have a grand plan as such for the future, I think it’s important to take one step at a time, as that way you can make sure it’s achievable but if I set myself a goal then I make sure I do it”.
