Thanks to a successful joint grant application from First Light films, Chocolate Films Ltd who have been operating for 10 years, were this month able to offer a week long film making course to St Basils young residents, providing them with a first hand experience of what it’s like to be part of a film crew.
The first day of the workshop included training in script writing, where the young residents discussed their favourite films to understand what makes a good story. They also discussed ideas for their own film and learnt how scripts in the film industry are laid out.
The second day encompassed a camera and sound skills workshop. Using home-video equipment, the young residents got to experiment with different kinds of shots.

In the rest of the training, the young people learnt how to write film and edit their own short story, using industry standard equipment and Final Cut software.
Community Filmmaker Ben Clough who facilitated the training said; “The aim of this week has been to give these young people an idea of what it’s like to be in a film or TV crew; the different roles involved, who's in charge…all these young people are very bright, they’ve been great at answering our questions and they clearly already have a fairly good idea of how to make a video. Everyone’s a filmmaker really and they’ve grown up with the technology, it’s just about giving them the vocabulary to work within the actual film industry”.
One of the young women involved with the workshops commented; “I have studied Media before at school but it’s great to have the chance to actually do it!”
The final film described as a black comedy and entitled “Your Dream Home” is a parody of an Estate Agent showing someone around their new home which may not be all it seems!
Chocolate Films hope the film will be ready to show at the Electric Cinema by October.
