War Memorial 1914-18

Remembrance Service at the Chapel of St Basil

“Not many people know of the church of St Basil where we have a beautiful Chapel with a wonderful mosaic in the style of St Basil in Seoul, South Korea. We are marking the 90th anniversary of Armistice day this year with a simple remembrance service on Tuesday 11/11/08 at 10.45 to 11.30 am.

Although the church is not consecrated and is used as headquarters of St Basils Charity, working with young people to prevent youth homelessness, we do not wish to forget the history of the people of the former Parish of St Basil.

We recently remounted the original wooden memorial plaque in the Chapel. I don’t believe it has been seen since the 1960’s. It names 112 men from GA Adams to JH Woolley, all carefully hand painted and lovingly decorated.‘In proud and grateful memory of the men who went out from the parish of St Basil to the great war and fell in their country’s service’

We are inviting anyone who has a family connection or connection to the Royal Warwickshire or Worcestershire Regiments, from which the men came, who would like to attend our service of Remembrance.

The Chapel is quite small so if members of the families are interested in attending please get in touch with me. Catherine Clarke 0121-772-2483 or email me on Catherine.clarke@stbasils.org.uk

St Basils is in Heath Mill Lane, Deritend, Birmingham B9 4AX. Members of the public are also welcome to visit 9.00am to 5.00pm on any weekday. ENDS

For more information and a copy of the memorial photograph contact Catherine Clarke Communications Officer as above.
