Staff and young people at St Basils scheme Carol Gething House organised a Baking event to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, learning how to bake cakes as part of a wider celebration held by the project, which included staff and young people from nearby scheme Radford House.
Carol Gething House offers 24 hour support to 24 young people and nearby Radford House is a offers semi-independent accommodation to 11 young people. Both are based in Small Heath, Birmingham.

Young people taking part in Carol Gething’s new weekly Cookery group came up with the idea, in order to help them learn baking skills and to publicise the group to other residents.

Emma Gardner, Manager of the Carol Gething scheme said: “The cookery group planned and researched all the different recipes for the event and preparation started on the bank holiday Monday 4th June with decorations of flags, balloons and posters and preparing the cake mixtures. On Tuesday 5th June young people and staff came together and enjoyed an afternoon of food and refreshments. Life Skills funding enabled us to facilitate this event on a larger scale for everyone to share. The young people were delighted with their efforts with some not having experienced baking before.”
