We are now managing the provision of a fully supported property in Kidderminster. The aim of the project is to reduce the use of bed and breakfast accommodation for young, vulnerable people aged 16-25 in the local area who are in housing crisis.

St Basils, in partnership with Wyre Forest District Council, Wyre Forest Community Housing and the private sector landlord, provides 24 hour cover at the newly refurbished accommodation. The projecy is fully staffed with day time support workers and night time concierge for the general day to day management and service delivery for the young residents.

The property comprises of 5 flats of which 2 are for single occupation and 3 are for sharing by 2 people, including parent and child.

The flats are of contemporary décor with self contained kitchen, bathroom and bedroom(s) and full central heating. Rent is payable weekly with a cash contribution by the young person for the utilities such as heating, water and lighting.

There is a large external rear area including a garden where social activities can take place. Staff offices have a reception, kitchen and bathroom and key working room where we work with the young person to plan for the future. It is envisaged that there will be IT equipment for the use of residents.

Young people will stay for up to 3 months and our support staff will work with them and Wyre Forest Community Housing and other agencies to secure permanent accommodation.

A typical young person will already have been receiving support from staff through our floating support scheme which is working with around 45 young people from the Wyre Forest district area.

Young people age 16/17 are at greater risk of becoming homeless if they do not access support and accommodation.

Many people in the younger age group suffer family breakdown and end up sleeping on friends settees or sofas (sofa surfing) and find themselves outside of any support systems, out of education and out of work.

In the relatively short time they will be in the accommodation we will be supporting each young person to engage in education, life skills, self development and move on. This is a top priority of St Basils and our support workers will work alongside each of the residents to work out the best action plan for the future. The accredited Life Skills programme is offered to all St Basils residents where they gain training and experience with an Open College Network a national educational qualification. We hold a grand Life Skills Graduation ceremony for them each year. Youth Involvement is also encouraged to enable them to develop self awareness and esteem which can be engendered through taking responsibility for events and activities, experiencing teamwork and developing social skills.
