Here are some Highlights of what young people said...
Q1: What are the things that make the difference to young people, in terms of homelessness services being good or excellent?
- Staff that push young people to do education and training so you reach your potential
- Staff who can really listen and take the time
- Staff who believe in you
Prevention and advice services/ work
- Housing advice services that are in local neighbourhoods, not just city centres
- Advice services should give you access to essential practical things when you are in crisis – like use of a phone, some money, food, a shower etc
- Community resources for young people are important for prevention- like sport and drama opportunities
Moving into and living in supported accommodation
- Services that are flexible to the individual needs of young people and don’t treat all young people the same
Every young person should be assessed on how vulnerable they are and what help they need. This should be reviewed because things can change
Q2: What are the benefits of involving young people in shaping how services are provided and the policies of an organisation?
For young people
- Being aware of the policies and plans helps to understand the organisation
- Increases young people’s self esteem and confidence
For the organisation
- The service to young people will be a lot better if young people help to shape it
- The more young people are involved, the more the organisation benefits
- Young people act as role models to other young people, which is very positive as it gives other young people hope for the future
