Close to 200 Solihull supporters took part in our third annual Solihull SleepOut on Friday 10th March 2017 sleeping overnight in cardboard boxes in a semi-derelict building which serves as the carpark for the Renewal Church on Lode Lane, Solihull.
The event saw performances from young singing sensation Tehillah Henry and local band Burnside who kept the participants entertained. We also had the Jaffabox Creative cardboard competition. Participants in the event are encouraged to be creative with their dwellings. This years winners were the St.Alphege Parish Youth Group for their rather spectacular recreation of the Millenium Falcon (pictured below).
Although at this particular SleepOut participants do have some protection from the elements, it is still a cold, uncomfortable surface and makes people think about those who have no choice but to sleep rough for real - a situation we want to avoid for young people in Solihull.
We have new services due to launch in Solihull on 3rd April 2017, aimed at assisting young people who have housing issues before they reach crisis point. Last year the 80 people who took part in Solihull SleepOut managed to raise over £4000 to support our services in Solihull. With over double that number taking part this year it is hoped the event will raise in excess of £10,000. All the money raised will go towards our services in the area, including equipping our new Solihull Youth Hub with computers and other facilities our consultation with young people in the area has identified are needed to truly support young people.
Solihull Councillor Ken Hawkins (circled) who also took part in the SleepOut has shared this blog post: https://cllrkenhawkins.co.uk/2017/03/14/solihull-sleepout/
The St Basils Head of Fundraising and Communications, Barrie Hodge said “We are absolutely stunned at the amount of people who took part in the event. 176 is a new record number of participants. This is an incredible sign from the community that they believe that homelessness should not be part of a growing up. Each and every one of the people who took part are stars and between them they have already raised £9,875! On behalf of all the young people we support in Solihull, thank you so much!”
